Work begins on £2.2m Shropshire tennis centre
Construction has begun on a new £2.2m, eight-court community tennis centre in Shropshire.
As previously reported in Leisure Opportunities, the new tennis centre, which will be built by construction firm Paveways, is the first phase in creating the new £20m Oakengate Sports and Learning Community in Telford.
The centre - being developed in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association and the Department for Education - will complement existing leisure facilities on site which include a recently refurbished gym, swimming pool, sports hall, outdoor synthetic turf pitch and athletics track.
Meanwhile Telford and Wrekin Council (TWC), which is behind the scheme, has announced that work is about to begin on another of its Sports and Learning Community projects.
Earthworks are due to start on the site of the planned new Sports and Learning Community and retail units at Paddock Mount.
The Dawley Sports and Learning Community will replace the current Phoenix School and will provide new playing fields, games courts and state-of-the-art facilities that will be accessible for the whole community during and outside school hours.
TWC leader Andrew Eade said: “This is a very exciting time for everyone in Telford and Wrekin and we will soon reach a stage where a number of different major projects are under construction to bring about an extensive social and economic regeneration of the borough.
“The tennis centre will be a fantastic sporting facility for use by everyone and will ultimately form part of the Oakengates Sports and Learning Community.
“And in Dawley, the earthworks to create a site at Paddock Mount for the new Sports and Learning Community will help to kick start the regeneration of Dawley’s historic centre. I think it is fantastic that the Sports and Learning Community will be at the heart of our wider plans for the town.”
