Wembley stadium celebrates progress
Prime Minister Tony Blair and England football captain David Beckham were present as the arch of the new Wembley Stadium was set in place last night (1 September).
The stadium is set to host the 2006 FA Cup as its first scheduled event and is pivotal to London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.
Michael Cunnah, Wembley Stadium’s chief executive, said: “This ceremony is a great way to show the progress that has been made. It’s incredible to think that only a few England home internationals remain until the England football team return to Wembley.”
The topping out event was marred by a protest from workers who were sacked last week after their employer, Cleveland Bridge, fell out with the main contractor, Multiplex.
