Tom Morris golf course re-opens

The Askernish Golf Course on the Island of South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, is due to reopen this Friday after an extensive restoration that has lasted two years.
The 18-hole course, originally designed by 'Old' Tom Morris in 1891, was restored back to its former self using traditional design principles by architect Martin Ebert, of Mackenzie and Ebert, and guidance from golf consultant Gordon Irvine.
Askernish Golf Club, a Community Interest Company, and its committee led the project with the support of its landowners Stòras Uibhist. The restoration was privately financed and carried out by volunteers due to limited funding.
The project also includes a small community club house, which provides facilities for youth and golfers. This was partly funded by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
Stòras Uibhist purchased 93,000 acres of land that comprises the South Uist Estate for £4.5m, with the help from Scottish Natural Heritage, the Lottery and the Highlands and Islands Enterprise, in 2006.
