Sunderland centre to undergo £2.4m revamp
Sunderland City Council (SCC) has confirmed that work is to start on the £2.4m renovation of Houghton Sports Complex, following the completion of a new wellness centre.
Improvements will be made to the existing changing facilities and a fully-accessible disabled changing space is to be added as part of the upgrade, which was approved in March 2010. Work will also include a new dance studio on the site of the former wellness centre, with the refurbishment scheduled to be completed in autumn this year.
The project will complement the development of the £21m Houghton Primary Care Centre - being undertaken by Sunderland Teaching Primary Care Trust - adjacent to the complex. SCC portfolio holder for health and wellbeing David Allan said: "Following the recent completion of the new wellness centre and reception area at Houghton Sports Centre as part of the new Primary Care Centre development, works are shortly due to commence to refurbish the existing building."
Designed by P+HS, the Primary Care Centre is being developed by Willmott Dixon and has become the first health building in the UK to receive a BREEAM Outstanding rating. The first services are due to come online at the centre in September, with all facilities to be fully operational by January 2012.
