Regeneration awards winners announced

A wide range of regeneration schemes, designed to transform inland waterways across the UK, have been unveiled as the winners of the 2009 Waterways Renaissance Awards at a ceremony on 31 March.
Organised by The Waterways Trust (TWT) and the British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA), the awards aim to recognise a variety of schemes across ten categories, including recreation and tourism, and historic environment. In addition to the 10 winning schemes, an Outstanding Achievement award was handed to Foxton Locks and Inclined Plane in Leicestershire, which also received the historic environment award, following the five-year restoration of a 20-acre (8.1-hectare) site alongside the Grand Union Canal.
Other winners included a project to create new public open space in the Medlock Valley, Manchester (area-based regeneration), a waterfront regeneration scheme in Castleford, West Yorkshire (community) and the Kirkintilloch Canal Festival 2008 (recreation and tourism). The awards ceremony was held at Liverpool's Arena and Convention Centre, with the winners were determined by an independent panel comprising a range of waterway, conservation and regeneration experts and chaired by Sir Peter Soulsby MP.
