Public sector leisure centre named best in London
A public sector leisure centre operated by Greenwich Leisure (GLL) has been named the best place to work out in London by Time Out magazine.
Camden Council’s Swiss Cottage leisure centre beat off private sector rivals to win the accolade, and was described by the magazine as a “gem in both sporting and architectural terms” that “really does offer something for everyone”.
Flick Rea, Camden Council’s executive member for culture, said: “It proves that everyone can have access to top quality leisure facilities at an affordable price – something that is becoming increasingly important with the rise in obesity and the drive for healthier lifestyles.”
Mark Sesnan, managing director of GLL, added: "Since re-opening just under two years ago, we have worked hard to ensure that the facilities and services on offer at Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre are second to none; and have strived to ensure that it is truly inclusive, offering something for everyone within the local community.”
The centre boasts two swimming pools, a 170-station gym, a climbing wall, a four-court sports hall, two squash courts, two multi-purpose studios, a soft play area, a crèche and a health and beauty suite.
Elsewhere, Camden Council’s GLL-run Kentish Town sports centre is set to undergo a £25m upgrade this year, which will see the introduction of a new competition pool, learner pool and health and fitness suite as well as the refurbishment of the existing leisure pool.
