Freedom Leisure to operate Brighton venues
Not-for-profit organisation Freedom Leisure has been selected to operate a number of local authority-owned sports facilities in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex.
Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC) is to transfer responsibility for the centres from a private operator to the trust for an initial period of 10 years starting on 1 April 2011. Freedom Leisure already runs nearly 20 sports facilities on behalf of seven local authorities across East and West Sussex, including Crawley's K2 and the Olympos, Burgess Hill.
A report put before BHCC's cabinet said the move would allow eco-friendly measures to be installed and the appointment of an officer to increase participation. BHCC cabinet councillor for culture David Smith said: "All our sports facilities need the kind of investment that councils cannot afford these days.
"So I believe the best option for them could be a community trust which reinvests any surplus back into facilities." Freedom Leisure managing director Jeff Hart added: "We share [the council's] aspirations for improving the city's leisure services and facilities for the whole community."
