Edinburgh skatepark finally approved

A £750,000 skatepark in Edinburgh’s Saughton Park has been approved by the city council after a 10-year wait.
The 2,100sq m (22,605sq ft) facility will boast beginner areas, intermediate ramps and competition-standard features.
City sports leader, Deidre Brock, said: “This is a momentous day for alternative sports in Edinburgh – skateboarders have been waiting for this decision for 10 years.
“The previous projects never got off the starting blocks, causing years of frustration, but this new plan will bring a facility to the city that will have a huge impact on Edinburgh’s young people.”
Sam Paterson, a member of the Edinburgh Skatepark Project, which has been campaigning for the facility for 10 years, added: “The need for a skatepark in Edinburgh has long been recognised by skateboarders, BMXers and rollerbladers and we’ve enjoyed the support of the council in our efforts to see the project through to fruition.
“Edinburgh deserves to have a top-class skatepark – it’s fitting for a capital city. Roll on 2009.”
The park has been designed by Dave Sowerby.
