Casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey, US, will temporarily close from 5 July owing to a state shutdown of nonessential government services.
The state’s gaming regulators – and consequently all 12 casinos – will remain out of action until the state governor and state assembly leaders agree on a budget dispute concerning a proposed sales tax increase.
It is anticipated that the casinos will try to take the matter to the New Jersey Supreme Court.
The closure will hit gaming companies such as Harrah’s Entertainment, Trump Entertainment Resorts and Boyd Gaming, resulting in a loss of around US$2m (£1m, 1.6m euro) in tax revenue per day.
Three years ago, the casinos went to court to seek the right to stay open amid the threat of a shutdown, but a budget was reached at the 11th hour to prevent a closure.
