Barry waterfront revamp plans resubmitted
A consortium of developers behind a £250m regeneration scheme, which aims to transform the waterfront in Barry, South Wales, have submitted revised plans to the Vale of Glamorgan Council (VGC).
Barry Waterfront Consortium (BWC) - comprising Persimmon Homes, Taylor Wimpey and Barratt Homes - aims to create a larger café quarter, a waterside square and a purpose-built community facility as part of the proposals. The revised plans also include an increased number of bars and restaurants, while the district centre adjacent to the end of The Mole will help to create a square surrounded on three sides by eateries.
Around 2,000 new homes, including a mix of private and affordable units, and a new link road to Barry Island form part of the development, which will help to create a new waterside leisure destination. BWC's Richard Keogh said: "Our ongoing public consultation has revealed a real appetite for an expanded commercial quarter within the scheme and we have shown our commitment by continuing to make improvements to the plans as the proposals progress through the planning process.
"The new-look waterside square, community facility and café quarter will create a vibrant heart for the new waterside development with a continental feel." Meanwhile, VGC will consider plans today (17 February) to offload land at the Triangle within Barry's Innovation Quarter to allow the development of a hotel, restaurant or public house.
However, the proposals - if approved by VGC's cabinet - will require the green light from the Welsh Assembly Government.
