Virgin Active's Great Wakering centre set to close

Great Wakering Sports Centre in Essex, which is managed by Virgin Active, could close on 1 October if its owner Rochford District Council (RDC) pushes through with a planned £80,000 cut to its budget.
The council has been told to find a total of £1.4m worth of savings by central government and it has looked for an alternative partner to take over the running of the centre from Virgin Active - but has so far been unsuccessful in its search.
RDC will hold an executive meeting on 22 June to decide on the future of the centre. If the council wants to close the centre as planned on 1 October, it needs to give Virgin Active a three-month notice by 30 June.
The Great Wakering centre is one of three facilities operated by Virgin Active on behalf of RDC as part of a larger management contract.
