Green light for York gym expansion
Members of the City of York Council's (CYC) cabinet have approved plans for a £540,000 expansion of the Energise gym facility on an "invest-to-save" basis.
Councillors approved the proposals after being presented with a business case for investing in the scheme on behalf of York High School at a meeting on 6 December.
The 60-station gym will now be expanded from 195sq m (2,099sq ft) by a further 219sq m (2,357sq ft) and will enable more local residents to make use of the facilities.
It is hoped work will start in spring with an anticipated completion date of October 2012. It follows the addition of a swimming pool at Energise, which opened in December 2009.
Energise manager Paul Bickle added: "This is the next logical step in improving and extending what has become a very popular community leisure facility."
