New £5m sports hub for Corby
Plans have been announced to establish a new £5m sports hub at the Rockingham Triangle Stadium in Corby, Northamptonshire.
Corby Borough Council revealed the ambitious scheme last month as part of its 'One Corby' strategy to regenerate the town. At the centre of the council's proposals for the site, which is the current home of Corby Town Football Club and Corby Athletics Club, is a new beacon tennis facility. The site would be one of only 25 across Britain, fully funded by the Lawn Tennis Association. It will include six new outdoor floodlit courts for Corby Tennis Centre, which was only rescued from the threat of closure earlier this year.
The plans also include a new £1.5m sports hall, with four badminton courts and indoor cricket nets, eight new changing rooms in conjunction with Corby Kingswood Juniors Football Club, and a multi-purpose room for dance and health and fitness training, which would also act as a matchday social club. An Olympic training-standard weights room will also be constructed, as well as a £500,000 3G floodlit pitch and new 1,000-seat stadium for the town's football club, which will be a Conference Grade B-standard facility.
The total cost of the project at Rockingham Triangle, which has already been included in the London 2012 pre-Games Training Camp Guide, is estimated to cost around £5.3m. Funding will come from a number of public sporting bodies, as well as council grants.
