Brockwell Lido finishes first stage of redevelopment
Brockwell Lido – or Brixton Beach as it is known locally – has been refurbished following an investment of more than £50,000 in preparation for the summer.
The pool has been stripped and repainted, as have the changing rooms, reception area and toilets.
The Grade II listed building, which was built in 1937, has retained many of its original features, including the original pavilion buildings, and is set to undergo a £2.5m restoration when the summer season ends in September 2005, aided by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £0.5m.
The development is being funded by Fusion – the not-for-profit organisation that provides health and leisure facilities in Southwark and Lambeth – and is being led by project architects, Pollard Thompson Edwards.
The plans include the restoration of the pool and modernisation of the juice bar, as well as the building of new facilities in buildings adjacent to the site.
These will include a reception, gym with wet suite, three activity studios and new wet and dry changing areas.
