£3m revamp for college's fitness facilities
The Manchester College is to invest £3m in redeveloping the college's fitness and sport facilities.
The health and fitness clubs at the college's Northenden and Moston campuses have recently been refurbished with around £100,000 being spent on 30 cv stations and resistance equipment supplied by Cybex.
The Northenden campus has also undergone substantial building work converting workshops into a new fitness suite, as well as the creation of a outdoor, multi use games area.
At Moston, the old gym, located in the basement of the building, has been refurbished including levelling the floor and adding a spa.
The opening of the fitness centres is the first phase of the college's plans to improve the provision of active leisure at the institution.
Further plans include the redevelopment of the old Harpurhey Baths. A listed building, the baths will be converted into a fitness suite and performance arts centre, which are due for completion in September 2010.
Neil McMillan, sports operations manager, said: "We have a robust and inclusive policy to health and wellbeing. To this end we have purchased high quality equipment to create a professional standard of facility, staffed with a highly trained team so that our facilities are comparable to those in a private gym."
Memberships at the clubs are open to general public and start at £1.50 per visit. Students and staff enjoy discounted rates at £1.
The Manchester College is one of biggest colleges in Western Europe, created by the merger of Manchester College of Arts and Technology and City College Manchester in August 2008.
The college is located over 18 campuses around Manchester with four of these housing fitness facilities.
