£16.1m leisure and culture park officially launched
£16.1m Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park has been officially launched on the former site of the St Thomas Becket School in Huyton, Merseyside.
Part of the centre has been open for 12 months but now all facilities are open including the new outdoor velodrome and BMX track.
The new facility includes two 25m lane pools, an eight-lane competition pool, six-court sports hall, fitness suite, squash court and dance studios.
There is also a spa with a number of treatment rooms, a relaxation area, manicure/pedicure lounge, aroma steamroom, rock sauna and salt inhalation room.
The project was designed by Broadway Malyan and built by Balfour Beatty Construction.
Basketball team Mersey Tigers are set to play the majority of their home matches at the centre.
The project forms part of Knowley Council's £25m investment to improve sports and leisure provision for local people as part of its Leisure Facilities Strategy across the borough.
Norman Hogg, Mayor of Knowsley, said: "Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park offers our residents the very best leisure facilities, which are further enhanced with the opening of the new outdoor velodrome and BMX track.
"Given the recent success at the Olympics and Paralympics, as well as the Tour of Britain bike race, I am sure this has inspired many of our residents and I would encourage as many people to come along and see it for themselves."
