Swansea Leisure Centre in £25m revamp
A £25m redevelopment of Swansea Leisure Centre is set to include an indoor surfing centre, a health spa and treatments area and, according to Swansea City and County Council, Wales’ largest fitness suite with 160-170 stations.
The indoor surfing centre will provide all-day waves for both boogie-boarding and stand-up surfing. There will also be a network of pools and water slides and a lazy river designed to enable children to learn to body surf.
The fitness facilities will include a gym specifically for under-16s and three aerobic studios. Procurement of the new equipment will not happen until next year.
The 11,650sq ft (1,080sq m) leisure centre will also feature a multi-purpose sports and exhibition hall, a synthetic ice rink, a 9m (30ft) climbing wall, a café bar and an internet café.
The centre’s exisiting first-floor bowls hall will be removed to allow for extra ceiling space above the sports hall, to make room for major sporting and cultural events and concerts.
The exterior will also be revamped by replacing concrete panels with clear glass, translucent glazing and timber paneling.
