Supersport to start South African expansion
The South African Supersport Health and Adventure Club has unveiled plans to expand to up to 25 sites over the next five years.
The club opened in Bloemfontein in 2001, after securing the right to name itself after South Africa’s leading tv sportsnetwork. “We needed a name that would add credibility to our new venture, because other big health club chains in South Africa had been liquidated, which left the market extremely sensitive,” said managing director Hilton Kotze.
“We obtained the rights for the Supersport name with a condition that we first prove ourselves in the market before any further expansion could occur.”
The Club also has to pay an annual naming right fee to comply with Supersport's professional code of conduct and levels of excellence.
The 4,500sq m club in Bloemfontein has a membership base of 8,500 and facilities include a climbing wall, indoor running track, wellness centre (offering senior citizen, cardiac, diabetic and orthopedic rehab programmes), as well as a scuba diving tank and sport-specific facilities for sports teams.
Such facilities mean members have a variety of cross training opportunities to keep their programmes fresh and interesting. “We felt that there was a definite need for a health club with a difference, offering the client more than just a traditional club,” said Kotze.
The club has bought in development company, Georgiou Family Trust, with a 25 per cent shareholding to build new facilities and help fund the expansion.
Negotiations are currently underway for sites in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
