National award for women’s fitness career programme
YMCA Fitness Industry Training (YMCAfit) has won the Opening Doors to Adult Learning Award, presented by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) as part of National Adult Learners’ Week.
YMCAfit was recognized for its training programme aimed at tackling under-representation of groups, including black and minority ethnic women, in the exercise and fitness sector.
YMCAfit devised and delivered the instructor training scheme over a two-year period around London. It was completed by over 85 women, who earned nationally-recognised qualifications as gym or studio instructors. They also received help finding a job in fitness, leisure, health and community activities.
The programme was also designed to be sensitive towards and supportive of participants’ cultural, personal and heritage needs.
The programme was co-funded by the London Development Agency and the European Social Fund.
Rachel Thomson, senior campaigns officer at NIACE, said: “In spite of the fact this is the 17th annual Adult Learners’ Week we continue to be amazed by the quality of the nominations we have received. YMCAfit’s story is an indication of how learning can transform lives completely.”
“YMCAfit’s hard work confirms my belief that improving your skills can be a life-changing experience,” said David Lammy, minister for skills.
