NCL Tynedale unveils scheme to boost local activity levels
North Country Leisure (NCL) Tynedale is to implement a £336,000, three-year initiative to provide a range of accessible sports and activities to increase activity levels across Tynedale and in Kielder Water & Forest Park.
The scheme, which has been partly financed by Sport England, is being undertaken by a group local organisations known collectively as Active Tynedale. Phase one will aim to deliver sport and activity around Tynedale, particularly targeting rural communities with newly appointed local coaches who will work alongside existing sports clubs and facilities.
A further part of the project, which has also received funding from Northumbrian Water, is designed to encourage more people to use the facilities available at Kielder Water & Forest Park. An events organiser is being appointed to create a year-round calendar of local events and increase participation. Elisabeth Rowark, director of the Kielder Partnership, which is co-ordinating the project, said: "We're delighted to be working with Active Tynedale to improve the events and activities on offer in Kielder Water & Forest Park.
"The grant means additional resources to make full use of activities involving the new Lakeside Way and mountain bike trails - just two of our latest developments in the park. It is such a great place to take in the fresh air, absorb tranquillity and do something physical - all great ingredients for a healthy lifestyle." Activities specifically for children will also be available thanks to funding for a further project from the Tynedale School Sport Partnership.
Judith Rasmussen, regional director for Sport England North East said: "We're really pleased that Active Tynedale has taken the initiative to set up some exciting, innovative projects that will make a real difference to the local people and help them take part in sport. "The up skilled team of coaches and volunteers coupled with the use of fantastic outdoor spaces such as Kielder Water & Forest Park and community halls will bring sport to the doorstep of local people and make it easier for them to take part."
