Development of the Central Area Leisure Centre (CALC) on a former brownfield site at The Dimple between Matlock and Darley Dale looks set to go ahead.

A decision on the planning application submitted to Derbyshire Dales District Council in mid May for the £12m leisure scheme in the Peak District is expected on 20 August.

If approved, the all-year-round, all-weather indoor and outdoor complex will incorporate a new swimming pool meeting regional and county level competition requirements, together with a main sports hall comprising county standard badminton courts and facilities for indoor hockey, basketball, volleyball, five-a-side football, netball, gymnastics and cricket nets.

A second hall will accommodate aerobics, dance, martial arts, fitness and yoga classes, as well as parties and table tennis, while footways and cycle routes will criss-cross the site.

A new café, meeting rooms and a community room will also be built to replace the present facilities at Darley Dale Community Centre.

The council is investing £7m in the CALC scheme, in addition to financial support from the East Midlands Development Agency (emda), Derby & Derbyshire Economic Partnership (DDEP) and Sport England.

Manchester-based Drivers Jonas has been appointed project manager.
