Jowell launches £6.5m Palatine Leisure Centre
The £6.5m Palatine Leisure Centre in Blackpool, which has been six years in the planning, was officially opened by culture, media and sport secretary Tessa Jowell on 13 February.
The dual-use centre – linked with Palatine Community Sports College – features a 25m swimming pool, an Aspire fitness centre and a sports hall, making it Blackpool Council’s first leisure centre to combine wet and dry facilities under one roof. A dance studio, rehabilitation suite and conference rooms complete the offering.
The Aspire fitness suite, equipped by Technogym, is the first of the brand to be rolled out across the council’s leisure sites.
Memberships and fitness classes are linked with the Blackpool Life – Rise to the Challenge programme, a campaign run by Blackpool Primary Care Trust in partnership with the council and the police, aimed at knocking the town from the top of the league tables as the unhealthiest place in the country to live.
