Horley leisure centre plans submitted
Detailed plans for the construction of a new multi-million pound leisure centre on the site of a former secondary school in Horley, Surrey, have been submitted to Reigate and Banstead Borough Council (RBBC).
Outline planning permission for the new facility was awarded by council planners on 25 March last year, although the plans were referred to the Government Office for the South East (GOSE) for consideration. Facilities at the leisure centre, which will replace the ageing Horley Anderson Centre, will include a 314sq m (3,380sq ft) fitness suite, a 25m swimming pool and a learner pool, a four-court sports hall and a dance studio.
Wet and dry changing areas and a reception are also among in the proposals, which were drawn up by S&P Architects, as well as cycle and car parking to be shared with Horley Town Football Club. A number of energy-saving measures will be incorporated into the construction of the new leisure centre in a bid to reduce carbon emissions by 30 per cent, compared with the existing Horley Anderson Centre.
The majority of the new centre's energy demands are expected to be met through the use of a wood-burning biomass boiler, while low-energy lighting, motion-sensitive lighting controls and natural ventilation measures will also be implemented. Adam De Save, RBBC executive member for leisure and wellbeing, said: "This is a major step towards the new leisure facilities that Horley residents have been promised.
"We wanted to minimise the new centre's environmental impact and so the proposed new centre has been designed with both this and accessibility in mind."
