Honey booster
Honey is as effective as improving athletic performance as specially formulated sports drinks and energy gels, according to a study by American researchers. The Times reports that scientists at the University of Memphis claim that cyclists who eat honey during a time-trial race perform as well as those who use an evergy gel containing purified glucose. Nine cyclists of competition standard were given energy supplements to take during three 40-mile time-trials in consecutive weeks. Three were given honey, three a glucose gel and three a flavoured placebo. Those who received the honey did as well in the race as those taking glucose, with both groups taking an average of three minutes less to complete the course than the placebo group.
