Hertsmere opens Fit Zone

Charitable trust, Hertsmere Leisure, has opened a children’s fitness facility as part of its social objectives for the local community.

The Fit Zone is the latest facility to join The Venue in Borehamwood, one of five sites managed by Hertsmere Leisure in partnership with Hertsmere Borough Council. The leisure centre already boasts a health club, swimming pool and soft play area.

More than 60 children signed up for an induction for the facility, which targets 6- to 11-year-olds following its launch this month.

Equipped by Panatta, Fit Zone offers eight machines and a climbing frame. The equipment is set in a brightly coloured area with a large matted floor space for group activities, games and circuits.

Each class is led by instructors who lead the children through a 60-minute structured class. Sessions consist of a warm up, followed by traditional games and activities aimed at raising heart rates as well as improving team work and co-ordination skills. The session concludes with time spent on the equipment, targeting specific muscle groups.

Fit Zone staff can offer children and families advice on healthy eating and nutrition and are also offering schools a special referral service for children they feel are at risk of the harmful effects of obesity.

The Fit Zone is available on a pay as you go basis or as a course, with sessions taking place at the weekend and after school.

Schools will be able to use the area during the day to complement the Venue’s school swimming programme.
