Football League sues for £178.5m
The Football League has launched a claim for £178.5m against Carlton Communications and Granada Media, owners of the failed ITV Digital.
The League claims the companies are denying responsibility for payments due under its contract with ITV Digital, and is seeking a declaration from the High Court that Carlton and Granada are liable as guarantors. It has made an application for an early hearing due to the financial crisis facing many of the 72 clubs in the first, second and third divisions that the League represents.
'From the outset of this dispute the Football League has made it clear that it will pursue Carlton and Granada for monies outstanding from our broadcasting agreement,' said chief executive David Burns.
The League is also preparing a claim against the ITV network, and intends to lodge a claim for damages of over £500m with the liquidator of ITV Digital when one has been appointed.
All media rights granted to ITV Digital in their contract, which came to an end with the broadcaster's collapse, have reverted to the League, which is currently in discussions with prospective partners for the sale of the broadcasting rights to the Nationwide League, Worthington Cup and LDV Vans Trophy.
