England best summed up by an American
A poll linked to World Book Day 2003 has named a book by American travel writer, Bill Bryson, as that which best sums up present-day England.
In Notes From a Small Island, which was picked from a shortlist of 10 titles, Bryson - born in Iowa but having spent many years living in England - refers to it as 'still the best place in the world for most things. To post a letter, go for a walk, watch television, buy a book, venture out for a drink, go to a museum, use the bank, get lost, seek help, or stand on a hillside and take in the view.'
