Edinburgh Leisure hosts indoor triathlon
Commonwealth Games triathlete Kerry Lang was competing in Edinburgh’s Gracemount Leisure Centre at the end of May, against a field of 30 of the facility’s local users.
The indoor event – which consisted of a 6km bike ride, 2.5km run and eight lengths of the swimming pool – was hosted by Edinburgh Leisure, manager of the facility.
The winner, the person who came closest to Lang’s effort – and even beat her time in the pool – was 15-year-old Astor Vidal, who won a year’s free gym membership with Edinburgh Leisure.
“I think this was a fantastic and novel idea and a great opportunity for people unsure of triathlon to give the sport a try; and in slightly more agreeable conditions than usual,” said Lang. “Congratulations go to Astor for giving me such a great race; he’s definitely one to watch!”
Edinburgh Leisure’s Steven Skinner was behind the concept: “Triathlon’s popularity is growing at an incredible rate,” he said. “No other sport has achieved Olympic programme status in such a short time.
“We were delighted with the response to this unique event, particularly with so many competitors of all ages and fitness levels taking part.” Details: www.edinburghleisure.co.uk
