Court throws out Football League's claims against ITV Digital owners
The High Court has ruled that Carlton and Granada are not liable for the £131m the Football League claims it is owed by ITV Digital, and left the League with a bill for £1m in costs.
The case was thrown out because the contract between the FA and the digital broadcaster was found to contain no legally enforceable guarantees.
FA executives are now considering whether to appeal against the ruling and are even said to be looking at the possibility of issuing a civil claim against the legal advisors who drew up the original contract with ITV Digital.
The League recently signed a £95m, four-year TV rights deal with BskyB, but clubs in the first, second and third divisions will find it hard to adjust to receiving just a fifth of the money they had been expecting - with first division clubs losing around £2m a season.
