Commonwealth Games to fuel volunteer culture
Commonwealth Games volunteers have been invited to continue their sporting involvement by signing up to a legacy programme launched by Sport England.
Volunteers who worked on the Games can register with Sport England though a newly-designed internet service which will find suitable volunteering roles in local sports partnerships and clubs. The offer is also open to those who applied to volunteer at the Games, but were not selected.
While currently only open to volunteers on the Games, Sport England plans to roll out the programme across the country next year through county sports partnerships and linked to the DCMS' Step into Sport volunteers and leadership project.
'Sport England wants to harness the enthusiasm and expertise of the Games volunteers and make the call for volunteering to become part of the culture of this country,' says chief executive of Sport England, David Moffett. 'Everyone knows that grass roots sport in this country would die without the endless hours and dedication that volunteers put in and the Games shows how important to elite sport they are as well.
