Calls for Welsh cultural heritage law
New legislation should be introduced by the Welsh Assembly Government to protect buildings "of importance for social and cultural reasons", according to assembly members.
A campaign to save the historic Vulcan pub in Cardiff from demolition as part of the St David's 2 development project was one of the key examples behind recommendations put forward by the Welsh Assembly's petitions committee. Campaigners bidding to save the 157-year-old property submitted a 5,000-name petition to the Welsh Assembly Government in February 2009 in a bid to protect its long-term future.
In addition to potential legislation to protect sites "of importance for social and cultural reasons", the committee called for Welsh Assembly Government to consult with local authorities and the Welsh Local Government Association to prevent the demolition of buildings that meet criteria for local listing. Save the Vulcan campaigner Rachel Thomas said: "We are pleased the Assembly's Petitions Committee took time to examine our petition. However, this is by no means the end.
"This is just the beginning of the Vulcan campaign, and our aim is to see the Vulcan thrive for another 157 years."
