Byers to increase National Minimum Wage by £16 per week
The Trade and Industry Secretary, Stephen Byers, has confirmed that the government is to increase the national minimum wage. The current minimum wage of £3.70 an hour for people aged 21 and over will rise by more than 10 per cent to £4.10, a weekly rise of £16. The increase will apply to full and part time employees, agency staff, and people who work from home, regardless of the size of the company. The rate of pay for employees between 18 and 21 is to be decided in May. The move comes following recommendation from the Low Pay Commission after its extensive report into the possible implications to businesses. The Commission concluded that the move would have 'no discernible impact.'
