BOA 'delights' Livingstone with Olympic bid proposals

The British Olympic Association has met with London Mayor Ken Livingstone and government ministers to present its detailed proposals for a bid for the 2012 summer Olympics. The BOA, whose proposed bid would encompass both east and west London sites, including the new Wembley stadium, said that both Livingstone and the government were 'incredibly positive' about the proposals and that the three parties would now concentrate on becoming stakeholders in the scheme. Livingstone has said he favours a bid centred on east London as it will offer major regeneration to an area much in need and Stratford is rumoured to have been targeted for an Olympic village site, although the BOA is keeping details of exact locations confidential. The BOA is now working with both parties to discuss costs of a bid, implications on services such as public transport, and the sustainability of a regeneration programme as all parties hope a London bid would experience long-term regeneration experienced by Barcelona in 1992 and Sydney in 2000. However, if Istanbul or Paris win the 2008 games as announced this July, Britain will postpone its bid until 2016. Athens is hosting the 2004 games and the IOC will not award three consecutive games to Europe.
