£130m funding boost for leisure projects
Six local authorities in the UK have been chosen by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as being eligible for part of £130m of funding towards the cost of new sport and library projects.
The six authorities are in Bristol, Worcestershire, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool and Wigan, with the schemes in Wigan and Worcestershire receiving joint funding with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
Bristol City Council is set to receive £30m for a health and multi-sport complex that will be linked to the both a local park and the further development of community hospital facilities.
Leeds City Council has proposed plans for three multi-sport community hubs totalling £30m while the Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council will receive £6.8m towards the construction of a mixed-use centre providing a range of services including sports and a library.
In total, 32 local authority projects were assessed by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and Sport England.
The six successful authorities will now make an outline business case to qualify for their allocated share of the money. Details: www.culture.gov.uk
